Tips for Seasoning Popcorn

If you want to forgo butter and make a lower-calorie option for your homemade popcorn, use avocado spray. Pop your popcorn, lay it out on a baking sheet (make sure it’s just been popped and still hot), spray with avocado spray, and then sprinkle seasoning on. Toss gently and put into a bowl.

Season while warm or still hot for best results, it helps for everything to adhere and stick together.

Shake, toss, or stir to get all that goodness evenly distributed and coated with seasoning.

Try Nutritional Yeast! If you love cheesy popcorn but want a dairy-free option, nutritional yeast gives a delicious umami-packed flavor.

Make a Decadent Treat. Melted chocolate, caramel, or even peanut butter can be drizzled over popcorn for an indulgent snack.

Mix Sweet & Savory. Don’t be afraid to mix flavors! I love different combos of seasoning, and it’s nice trying some more grown-up flavors like honey, garlic, and rosemary popcorn recipe below. My daughter calls it date night popcorn.

Don’t Overdo It – A little seasoning goes a long way! Start small, and keep adding seasoning slowly until it’s just right.

Common Questions When Making Homemade Popcorn Seasonings:

What’s the best way to evenly coat popcorn with seasoning?

The best method is to shake it up! Add your popcorn and seasoning to a large bowl with a lid or a brown paper bag, then shake well to distribute the flavors evenly. I use a big wooden spoon and stir it, and then shake the bowl.

Can I use fresh herbs or cheese for seasoning?

Yes, but they work best when finely ground. Dried and powdered herbs or cheeses (like powdered Parmesan or nutritional yeast) will stick better than fresh ingredients. If using fresh herbs, finely chop them and mix with melted butter before tossing.

What are some healthy popcorn seasoning options?

For a lighter option, skip the butter and use nutritional yeast, cinnamon, smoked paprika, garlic powder, or a touch of sea salt. You can also use avocado spray or coconut oil instead of butter for a healthier twist.
