In response to the multiple requests to grill directly on the grates:

The original intent of the Grandpa Jakes Campfire cooking system centered entirely on the versatility of heat control and the simplicity of pot, pan and grill handling over an open campfire. The construction of the entire system is hot rolled metal, which is used by many other systems on the market.  As an originator and manufacturer of Grandpa Jakes, our statement not to grill or barbeque directly on the grill was not founded on any known chemical dangers.  There is a physical reason, however.  The system uses weight and leverage for stability and safe handling.  Grilling directly on the grate lightens the leverage of the cooking arm by removing the weight of the pan.  Any vibration, such as a spatula hitting or even scraping the grate could cause the leverage to release from the post, thus dropping the grate in the fire.  This could result in personal injury.

We believe each individual user of the system may use the grate to cook on at their own risk.  However, we still suggest not grilling directly on the grate due to the above stated reasons.
