My great granny was a very resourceful woman. She lived thru the depression, and I grew up begging for any story she would tell me of those days. She always thought it funny for young girl to want to know about that time in history, but she would still tell me what I wanted to know.

I enjoyed digging in her cellar/basement; I found all kinds of goodies. I loved everything that was old and had a story. I still do, that’s why I love old simple recipes. They have stories and life in them. This oldie was my granny’s she made the best pies! It’s simple and tasty. This really was a simple desert often used during the 30’s and 40’s.

½ c. cocoa

¼ cup cornstarch (or ½ c. flour)

3 eggs

1 ½ c. sugar

¼ tsp. salt

2 c. milk

1 tsp. vanilla

Mix cocoa, cornstarch, beaten egg yolks; sugar and salt, then add milk gradually, while stirring. Cook until thick, beating it smooth. Pour into a pre-baked pie shell.

Just a note: I no longer use cornstarch, I substitute with arrowroot flour or unbleached flour. I also use organic sugar or honey in my recipes.

Enjoy some old fashioned goodness!

Hi Abby Jo,
I stopped by today after a visit with my friend Deb's Dandelion House blog. I can remember my father telling about his mother's chocolate pie, and I bet that it just might be something very similar to your gram's! Thank you for a wonderful memory and putting a smile on my face today...Now I need to make the pie!!
Thank you,
Jan

This looks great. I cannot wait to try it. Unfortunately, neither of my grandmothers cooked much and they left no recipes behind.

Oh my goodness! This pie brings back memories. My mother made this all the time when I was growing up. It was my Dad's favorite. (Although she added a meringue top!) I just made it tonight and it was wonderful. Thanks for the memory!

I some times add a meringue top, and other times I whip up some fresh cream to go with it. Glad it brought you sweet memories.

This pie looks so good. I saw it when it posted and was thinking of making a treat for the boys this week. I am going to try to cook it in little ramekins as my boys can not have the crust (gluten free). Thank you for sharing :)

I just printed this off to make for Easter with my Grandma. She was raised during the great depression and is also a very resourceful woman and fabulous cook! I am privileged to have spent lots of time with her during my life. She is funny, though..... she always says "I don't know why they call it the 'good old days'". According to her there is nothing good about out houses, and pumping water for baths and laundry! LOL!
